A little background (written by Gracie)...
As many of you know, I started Let the Kids Play going into my junior year at THS to provide underprivileged youth with new to lightly-used athletic equipment. With your help, LTKP has both donated equipment to and funded the athletic programs of Nativity Preparatory School in Wilmington, DE, and Flying Kites Global, an orphanage 90 minutes outside of Nairobi, Kenya. Altogether, our local community has raised over $5,000 for LTKP, and therefore, for youth around the world. After I collapsed two days post-graduation in 2011, many, including myself, were anxious to learn what I'd be capable of doing, physically and mentally, when I came out of Christiana hospital. In early August, family and friends told me that going to college at the end of the month was perhaps ill-advised, doctors said that playing soccer was out of the question, and LTKP had been placed last on the list of things to think about. Three weeks later, I went to college, stayed in the honors program, played soccer, and kept LTKP constantly in my thoughts, although I didn't know what my next step should be after such an incident. Now I know, but I need your help.
This winter, I want to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro for the Flying Kites children and stay with their family for three weeks after the climb as a volunteer/ambassador. To do so, I must raise $8,000 for their family by mid-December. This trip has been a dream of mine for years now, and will enable me to 1. test my physical limits (as I have been restricted from varsity soccer by decisions based solely on legal protocol), 2. expand LTKP and its prospects, and 3. understand the medical care in Kenya and nearby countries, as I am a Pre-Med major and want to analyze areas that most urgently need to be addressed to better and save lives- because I know, if I did not live where I do, with access to top medical care, I would simply not be here today. To support young dreams and healthy lives around the world, I'd like to invite you to a fundraising brunch. There will be food, drinks, and a silent auction, along with several other optional activities. Proceeds will benefit Flying Kites, and any lightly-used athletic equipment that you can offer will go to the Wilmington YMCA of DE.
